Types of Glass Shower Doors

10mm Frameless Swing Showers

If you want a shower door that swings, a pivot door is the best option. Special hinge allows these doors to open 180 degrees in or out. It can either be mounted on one side or centrally, and thus it appears super modern – just like those curved glass shower doors of the most stylish bathroom!

Glass Shower Doors

Frameless Sliding Showers

Sliding shower doors are quite popular as they save space, and nowadays, you can find frameless shower doors. They may be a little more expensive, but they certainly look sleek and clean with no metal framing. If you are on a budget, however, a regular tracked sliding door is much cheaper and requires simple installation, and still works well.

Glass Shower Doors

Bypass Sliding Frameless Showers

Bypass sliding doors work like a patio door; they simply slide on tracks. These doors typically have two panels that slide past each other. Some of them come with rollers to make the sliding even smoother, so it’s not just practical but stylish too!

Glass Shower Doors

Elite Framed Swing Shower

When you want the look of a semi-frameless swing door without the cost, try the Elite swing door. The modern style lends itself well to a fresh bathroom remodel. With a 3/8” fixed panel and 1/4” swinging door, it’s easy to open and close, making it much more practical than your average 3/8” frameless door.

Glass Shower Doors

Silhouette Framed Sliding Shower

Silhouette doors are an excellent option if you’re looking for an affordable shower door that still makes a great impression. With minimal frames and ample glass, they add to a minimalist aesthetic in your bathroom. These are ideal for guest bathrooms or any on-a-budget remodel that still makes a big impact!

Precision

The use of glass doors for showers alters the look of bathrooms, making them appear spacious and open, especially when crafted with careful precision. For example, frameless glass removes the sightlines, making the shower part of the overall design. Clear glass doors display tile work and quality fittings. Frosted or patterned glass doors can provide privacy, but still allow natural light to enter.

Durability

Unlike shower curtains or plastic panels, glass doesn’t harbour mould or mildew. For instance, at Glass Project Solutions Ltd. we provide tempered and laminated glass which resists impact and thermal stress. Additionally, a simple wipe with a cleaner keeps it pristine, and hydrophobic coatings help repel water and minimise spots. These features not only make glass doors aesthetic, but durable as well.

Materials and Safety Considerations

Safety Glass Requirements

  • Tempered or Laminated Safety Glass (CAN/CGSB‑12.1‑M) – Tempered glass is heat‑treated to increase strength and breaks into small, blunt fragments for safety. Laminated glass consists of layers bonded with a plastic interlayer; if broken, the interlayer holds shards together, preventing injury.
  • Structural Design (CAN/CGSB‑12.20‑M or ASTM E1300) – Glass must be designed to withstand load and impact according to these standards.
  • Thickness and Size Limits – The code includes tables listing maximum allowable areas for different glass thicknesses and types. Shower door panels typically range from 6 mm (¼”) to 10 mm (⅜”) thick, with laminated panels thicker due to the interlayer.

Hardware and Components

  • Hinges – Wall‑mounted or glass‑to‑glass pivots designed to support heavy panels.
  • Handles & Pulls – C‑shaped or ladder pulls for easy gripping; available with matching towel bars.
  • Channels & U‑Clamps – Secure fixed panels to walls or floors while allowing expansion and contraction.
  • Rollers & Tracks – For sliding doors, stainless steel rollers ride on polished tracks with soft‑close dampers.
  • Sweeps & Seals – Vinyl bottom sweeps, magnetic seals, and clear polycarbonate jambs keep water inside the enclosure.

Meeting Canadian Code and Standards

Material Standards

Section 9.6 of the BC Building Code (and the National Code’s equivalent) requires glass used in shower enclosures to conform to CAN/CGSB standards. Our glass panels are manufactured from tempered safety glass that meets CAN/CGSB‑12.1‑M, and our laminated options incorporate PVB or SentryGlas® interlayers for additional security and sound attenuation.

Safety & Security

The code explicitly prohibits using anything other than safety glass for shower or bathtub enclosures. We never use annealed (untreated) glass; every shower door is tempered and, where required, laminated. Panels are marked with certification stamps to demonstrate compliance.

Structural Design

The design of each panel must meet structural design standards (CAN/CGSB‑12.20‑M or ASTM E1300). Our engineering team calculates load resistance based on panel size, thickness, a nd mounting method, ensuring the glass will withstand impacts and thermal stress.

Proper Marking

Transparent doors accessible to the public must have hardware or fixtures to make their presence obvious. We use handles, towel bars, and discreet logos to identify glass doors clearly. In commercial settings, we can apply safety bands or etched patterns at eye height to satisfy visibility requirements.

Accessibility

For accessible showers, building codes require a clear opening width (often 800 mm or greater) and minimal thresholds to accommodate mobility devices. Our barrier‑free sliding doors or pivot doors with low‑profile sills meet these requirements. We can integrate grab bars, bench seating, and textured glass for enhanced safety.

The Glass Shower Door Manufacturing Process

Consultation and Design
Our process begins with a consultation to understand your project’s requirements. For builders and architects, we review plans, discuss design intent, and address code requirements. We measure site conditions, noting wall plumbness, tile thickness, and out‑of‑square openings. We also explore options for door configuration, hardware style, glass thickness, and finishes.

Engineering and Fabrication
Once a design is finalized, our engineers produce shop drawings and confirm dimensions. Glass is cut to precise measurements using CNC machinery and waterjet technology. Edges are polished or beveled for safety and aesthetics. Holes for hinges, handles, and towel bars are drilled according to hardware specifications. Tempering occurs in controlled ovens to ensure consistent strength; laminated panels are autoclaved to bond interlayers.

Hardware Finishing
Hardware components are machined from solid brass or stainless steel. Finishes are applied through electroplating, powder coating, or PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) to provide corrosion resistance. Each piece is inspected for finish consistency and fit.

Installation Preparation
We coordinate with builders to ensure adequate blocking behind walls—studs or solid backing is required where hinges or channels will mount. The shower base must be sloped toward the drain, and tiles must be installed before measurements. We verify that thresholds are level and surfaces are plumb.
