Safety Glazing

Canadian codes require that glass other than safety glass should not be used in a shower or bathtub enclosure. Laminated and tempered types of safety glass are used exclusively in doors, railings, and shower enclosures. Tempered glass is heated to a very high temperature and then quickly cooled down to be four to five times stronger than annealed glass; when it breaks, it shatters into small but blunt pieces. Laminated glass has an interlayer of clear glass between the panes; in a break, the interlayer holds glass shards together, making it impact-resistant and soundproof. Our laminated products are suitable for balcony rail or high-traffic areas.

Section 9.6 of the BC Building Code requires that glass in construction conform to CAN/CGSB standards, including tempered or laminated safety glass and insulating glass units. It also mandates that glass be designed for load and impact according to CAN/CGSB‑12.20 or ASTM E1300. When designing railings, windows, or walls, our engineering team calculates loads for wind, impact, and thermal stress, ensuring each pane meets or exceeds code requirements. For example, we select the glass thickness based on panel size and location, adhering to code tables listing maximum allowable areas.
