Choose a height that would not be too risky and would maintain the view. Stairs inside the building can be 36 inches, balconies on the outside: 42 inches. The higher rails increase the level of safety, but can hamper sightlines. This can be alleviated by glass or cable infill.
A constant top rail gives a comfortable hand grip. In the case of stairways, handrails should be carried all the way through the stairs and come back to the wall or a post at the ends. We make handrails holdable with a cross-section between 30 and 60 mm (1.25 and 2.5 inches) and rounded-off edges.
The end posts have to be safely terminated- capped or returned to the wall to prevent sharp edges. In the case of metal railings, we weld or fit end caps; in the case of wood, returns are rounded or sculpted. To prevent damage to clothing and skin, we follow the code requirements of safe termination.
The architecture of the building must be complemented by railings. Sleek, frameless glass suits contemporary structures; decorative steel pickets fit traditional homes. In redesigns, we recreate old railing shapes with up-to-date materials that comply with the current standards. Our design team works with architects to make sure that railings blend with cladding, trim and landscaping.
Material | Properties |
---|---|
Aluminium | Lightweight, rust-resistant, and low maintenance. Powder-coated aluminium resists fading and chipping. Available in a wide range of colours and finishes. |
Steel | Offers strength and slim profiles. We galvanise and powder-coat steel components for corrosion resistance, making them suitable for high-traffic and commercial installations. |
Stainless Steel | Provides high corrosion resistance and a sleek, modern look. Grade 316 stainless steel is recommended for coastal environments. |
Wood | Timeless and warm. Cedar, redwood, and pressure-treated pine require periodic staining or painting. Wood can be combined with metal pickets or glass panels for hybrid railings. |
Composite & PVC | These materials offer the look of wood without its maintenance. They resist rot and fading and are often used in combination with aluminium or steel pickets. |
Glass | Tempered or laminated safety glass; available in clear, tinted, low-iron, and textured options. |

Compliance with national and provincial building codes is non-negotiable. The National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) and local building bylaws stipulate guardrail heights, live loads, and maximum gap dimensions.
Residential guardrails must be at least 36 inches high, measured vertically from the walking surface to the top of the guard. Some provinces require 42 inches on exterior balconies or multi-family decks. Stair handrails must be mounted between 34 and 38 inches above the nosing.
Any gap in the railing must not allow a 4‑inch (100 mm) sphere to pass through. This “4‑inch rule” applies to spacing between pickets, cables, glass panels and the bottom rail. A larger gap of up to 6 inches is allowed between a stair tread and the bottom rail near risers for ease of cleaning.
Guards must resist a uniform horizontal load (commonly 0.75 kN/m or 51 lb/ft) and a concentrated load of 1.0 kN (225 lb) applied at any point without permanent deformation. Posts and connections must be designed for these loads.
Handrails and guardrails must terminate safely without obstructing pedestrian travel. Building codes recognise that an end post for picket railings or end caps for handrails are considered safe and will not obstruct the travel of a pedestrian. This prevents clothing from catching and creates a clean finish.
Our engineers stay abreast of code changes and ensure each installation meets or exceeds requirements. We provide shop drawings, calculations and engineering stamps where necessary.
Whether you need picket railings for a family deck, glass railings to showcase a panoramic view, or custom cable railings for a modern staircase, we deliver solutions that last and leave an impression.
