Picket Railings

Railings are an essential component of both commercial and residential buildings. They serve the purpose of keeping the residents safe and protecting them from falling. A picket railing system is an excellent choice if you plan to install them in your home. It consists of high-quality aluminum or stainless steel railing, posts, and pickets.

Windscreen Spigot Railings

This railing system is used when you can mount your railings on the floor or ground surface. It is perfect for outside patios, porches and balconies. The tilt lock technology is utilized to keep the glass in place. This technology easily allows the alignment of the mirror vertically and horizontally to get perfect alignment.

Glass Composition & Hardware Choices

Glass Thickness

Glass thickness influences strength and deflection. Typical railing glass ranges from 6 mm (1/4 in.) to 12 mm (1/2 in.). The exact thickness depends on panel width, height, mounting method, and load requirements. For example, a 1.2 m (4 ft) panel might use 10 mm heat-soaked tempered glass, while a 1.5 m (5 ft) panel or a free-standing balustrade may require 12 mm laminated glass. In high‑rise or public applications, we often specify laminated or heat-strengthened laminated glass for added safety.

Glass Coatings

Low-iron glass reduces the green tint found in standard float glass, providing clearer views that are ideal for premium applications. Tinted glass in shades such as bronze, grey, or blue helps reduce glare and solar heat gain, making it both functional and stylish. Frosted or etched glass offers privacy while still allowing natural light to pass through, striking a balance between openness and discretion. For more customized solutions, ceramic frits and digital printing can be used to bake patterns, logos, or safety bands directly into the glass.

Framing Materials

Aluminum frames are lightweight, corrosion‑resistant, and available in anodized or powder‑coated finishes. Stainless steel (grades 304 or 316) offers high strength and is ideal for coastal or harsh environments. Hybrid frames can be clad in wood to match decking or interior trim. All fasteners must be made of stainless steel or galvanized steel to prevent corrosion.

Hardware & Anchoring

Hardware includes base shoe extrusions, spigots, standoffs, clamps, top rail, and handrail brackets. Anchor bolts must be sized to resist code loads. For concrete, we typically use heavy-duty sleeve anchors or epoxy-bonded threaded rods, while wood framing may require lag screws into blocking. The BC Bulletin notes that loads are expressed as kN/m, roughly equivalent to 100 kg per metre of railing; hardware must distribute these loads without causing failure.

Engineering & Structural Considerations

Load Calculations
The design of a glass railing involves knowledge of uniform line load (applied along the handrail) and point load (applied at any of the points on the infill). The BC Bulletin indicates that 1.0 kN/m is approximately an individual weighing 100 kg leaning on one metre of railing. The infill should be able to withstand both distributed and concentrated pressure. Our structural engineers examine the wind loads, crowd movement loads, and other snow loads on the outdoor railings.

Topless Systems & Alternative Solutions
Topless systems (without a top rail) require an alternative solution report signed by a professional engineer in jurisdictions like British Columbia. The engineer must demonstrate structural redundancy—typically by using laminated glass that remains in place after breakage and by designing connections that sustain loads even if one panel fails. A cap rail is sometimes added for redundancy and to protect exposed glass edges.

Expansion, Deflection & Contact
Glass expands and contracts with temperature changes. Systems must provide clearances so the glass can move without putting stress on the edges. Installation guidelines state that glass should not be in direct contact with metal; plastic setting blocks and gaskets are used. The base shoe or clamps must allow for deflection within acceptable limits. Overly stiff mounting can cause glass to fracture under stress.

Installation Methodology

Installation

  • Site Assessment & Design – We survey the site, identify structural supports, and confirm that the deck or balcony can support the loads. We prepare engineered drawings that specify glass type, thickness, hardware, anchor spacing, and details for waterproofing.

  • Manufacturing & Quality Control – Glass panels are fabricated with polished edges and any necessary holes or cutouts. All hardware is inspected for quality and finish. Laminated glass is tested according to CAN/CGSB‑12.1 standards.

  • Substrate Preparation – We ensure surfaces are level and structurally sound. For wood decks, blocking is added where needed. Waterproof membranes are protected with flashing.

  • Base Shoe & Hardware Installation – Using templates, we mark drill holes. We attach base shoes or spigots with specified anchors. CR Laurence’s Taper‑Loc® system requires pre-drilling base shoes and installing wedge kits; it reduces installation time by 50 % and allows on-site adjustabilit. For fascia-mounted systems, we bolt brackets through the rim joist and use backing plates to distribute loads.

Repairing

  • Setting Glass Panels – Panels are lifted into position using a suction cup, forr base shoe systems, tapered wedges, or gaskets to secure the glass, which is then adjusted for plumb. For spigots and standoffs, clamps are tightened according to torque specifications. We ensure there is an even gap at panel edges and that glass is not touching metal.

  • Top Rail & Cap Installation – If required by code, a top rail is fitted over the panels. Cap rails can be stainless steel, aluminum, or wood. They provide a comfortable grip and protect glass edges.

  • Sealing & Finishing – We apply silicone sealants at joints to prevent water ingress. We install trim covers on base shoes. Finally, we clean the glass and conduct a final inspection, ensuring compliance with building codes.

  • Documentation & Inspections – We supply documentation for permit inspection, including engineering calculations, product certificates, and installation guides. Our team is present for the final inspection to answer questions and provide maintenance guidelines.

Benefits of Vernon Glass Railings

Aesthetics & Views

Transparent panels provide unobstructed vistas, making spaces feel larger and more connected to the outdoors. Glass pairs beautifully with wood decking, stone patios, concrete balconies, and interior staircases.

Safety & Security

Modern glass railings are designed to meet rigorous safety standards. Laminated or tempered glass and robust hardware withstand high winds, heavy loads and impacts. Laminated glass remains intact even if broken.

Noise & Wind Control

Glass acts as a windbreak, making balconies more comfortable. Laminated glass also provides some sound dampening, reducing road or city noise without blocking views.

Durability & Longevity

Safety glass is resistant to UV radiation and temperature extremes. Hardware made from stainless steel or powder‑coated aluminum resists rust. Properly installed railings can last decades with minimal maintenance.

Property Value

Quality glass railings enhance curb appeal and increase property value. Buyers and tenants appreciate the modern, upscale look and the feeling of openness.

Meeting Canadian Building Code Requirements

Guard Heights & Loads

The National Building Code (NBC) and provincial codes of Canada provide very high demands on the height of a guard and load resistance. The NBC states that the height of decks and balcony guards must be at least 1,070 mm (42 in.) and must support a uniform horizontal loading of 0.75 kN per meter (51 lb/ft) and a concentrated loading of 1.0 kN (225 lb) at any point. In Ontario, the Ontario Building Code (OBC) requires guards at 914 mm (36 in.) on low balconies and 1,067 mm (42 in.) on stair landings. The railings will also have to support a vertical load of 1.5 kN per meter at the top, as people may lean against them or sit on the railings.

In British Columbia, Bulletin 22-05 states that all glass guards must comply with loads as defined in Section 4.1.5.14 (Part 4 buildings) or Section 9.8.8.2 (Part 9 buildings) of the BC Building Code. These loads represent distributed pressure on the handrail and spot loads on the infill panel.

Safety Glass Requirements

Tempered glass: Heat-treated to increase strength; breaks into small pieces rather than sharp shards. It’s common in residential applications but can occasionally fail spontaneously. Heat-soaked tempered glass undergoes additional heating to minimize the risk of spontaneous breakage.

Laminated glass: Multiple glass layers with a plastic interlayer that holds fragments together upon impact. Laminated glass remains in place after breakage, maintaining the barrier, and is often mandatory for glass near edges or overhanging the floor.

Heat-strengthened laminated glass offers a higher structural capacity than ordinary laminated glass. It’s required where glass is within 50 mm of the edge of the floor or beyond it.

Wired glass: Embedded wire mesh holds fragments but has limited use due to lower impact resistance.
